Harry & Me is a beautifully designed treasure trove of over 280 memories of Harry Nilsson by the fans and musicians who loved him most, illustrated with rare and personal photos and memorabilia. The first 1,000 copies come with a bonus CD — Harry on Harry — rare recordings from the 60s, 70s and 80s of Harry Nilsson talking about everything from Bertrand Russell to The Beatles.
Music
While Nilsson began coming into his own at the beginning of the 1970s, Randy Newman was virtually unknown to anyone outside the world of music publishing and almost nonexistent as a performer. The critical appeal that both would eventually (and rightfully) attain makes this artistic summit all the more poignant. Famously named “Record of the Year” by Stereo Review magazine, Harry Nilsson’s Nilsson Sings Newman stands well outside the mainstream of other LPs of this period – with Newman’s piano providing the sole accompaniment to the multi-tracked army of Nilsson harmonies and overdubs. Stunning from start to finish, fan favorites include “Vine St.,” “Love Story” and “Living Without You.”
Note: An international ad campaign from Vodafone/RealLight – which emphasized homey themes like staying in touch and always being there – made use of Nilsson’s “I’ll Be Home” to underscore the commercial’s concept. The 45-second spot tastefully uses the stripped “Alternate Version” from the Nilsson Sings Newman sessions (a bonus track) to draw attention to the inherent loneliness of Randy Newman’s tune. Listen below, featuring Nilsson’s voice and Newman’s piano.
